THE NEW WORLD OF OLD VEGETABLES
Are you seed shy? Starting from seed is a daunting process for the novice gardener. But many new, “old” vegetable varieties and many newer F1 hybrid vegetables can only be had by growing- your-own. Getting seeds into soil is the easy part. Matters turn testy when hundreds of sprouts appear simultaneously all demanding nutrients, moisture, warmth and light. Denied any of these factors, seedlings grow tall, grow thin, flop and fail.
The biggest stumbling block when starting with seed is one’s own enthusiasm. The temptation to sow the entire packet at once should be nipped in the bud. Experts admonish: Plant only a few seeds of each variety. Try repeat sowings of vegetables in intervals. Staggered sowings will ensure extended harvesting times.
Seeds on a band are a great step forward for those of us with heavy hands. Bio-degradable peat pots help others who find extracting the seedlings, micro roots and all, difficult when it comes to transferring seedlings to the garden bed or bigger pots.
